SML (Sound Mathematics Ltd.) is a micro company involved in industrial research, a spin-off from the Waves and Fields Research Group.
We develop software for modelling ultrasound, with applications to ultrasonic NDE (Non-Destructive Evaluation).
SML is an associate member of UK RCNDE.
We also promote sound mathematics education of undergraduate engineers - see our other website:
The SML Managing Director is
Professor Larissa Fradkin, BSc, PhD, FIMA, FInstP, MLMS. Her career spans 38 years, eight years as a Government research scientist at the Department of Industrial and Scientific Research in New Zealand, seven years as a Research Associate at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge and 16 years as an academic at London South Bank University. Since 1997 Larissa was a principal investigator on 30 NDT research projects, with the grant total of over £2M, overwhelmingly for staff costs. For the past several years she has been concentrating on developing the AutoNDE module for automatic crack characterisation.
The SML Technical Manager is Callum Moscrip, AI and Machine Vision Research Engineer, BSc in Physics and MSc in Robotics. He has joined Sound Mathematics Ltd. in January 2019 and wrote the AutoNDE module FFS_ASSESS for assessing pressure vessel corrosion and fitness for service. Callum gained AI experience using deep learning and instance segmentation to locate and classify images for agricultural robotic application. He also possesses a good theoretical understanding of machine learning and has practical experience in programming languages such as Python and C++. Lately Callum has developed skills in using OpenCL and CUDA general purpose processing APIs.
